Description

APT-5-50 is an gigabit PoE network switch with the ability to operate as a LAN extender (repeater) and PoE power supply. It is most commonly used in situations where several network devices (e.g. several IP cameras) need to be run on a single UTP cable, or where an additional network branch is required.

The device allows us to power up to 4 PoE receivers via a single UTP cable. In situations where we do not have the possibility of supplying a new cable or where supplying a new cable would be expensive, the APT-5-50 allows us to use the existing cabling.

APT-5-50 can act as a LAN + PoE extender in situations where the distance between devices exceeds 100m. If it is possible to split the cable into sections under 100m of UTP cable, it allows us to extend the range of the LAN without the need for additional power supply while maintaining full 1000Mbps throughput.

Basic applications:

  • as a splitter for 4 PoE receivers (IP cameras) powered from a single UTP cable, e.g. installation of additional cameras in place of existing cameras without changing the cabling
  • in cascade connection (series) for connecting several PoE IP devices over distances exceeding 100m UTP
  • the possibility of local power supply allows to build a complex structure of distribution points in extensive installations

APT-5-50 is designed to cooperate with any network devices, IP cameras and others powered by PoE 802.3af/at/bt60 standard.

All ports provide a throughput of 1000Mbps which is important for connections in a bus topology.

The APT (Atte Power Tree) series provides compatibility with IEEE 802.3af/at/bt90 as PoE receivers and IEEE 802.3af/at/bt60 on all output ports. When a device is connected to ports 2-5, the receiver is identified and, if it is a PoE-powered device, power is switched on at the port.

The APT switch has the possibility to be powered from an external power supply via an additional screw connector, in which case LAN port 1 is used as a LAN network port (without PoE power supply).

The PoE identification standard, the operating status and the available power for the receivers are indicated by LEDs:

  • PWR - device is powered
  • LED at - identification as 30W PoE receiver
  • LED bt - identification as PoE 60W receiver
  • LED at + LED bt - identification as PoE 90W receiver
  • LED LV - Low voltage, low voltage (<44V) on the device

When the voltage on the switch drops below 44V the LV LED will be switched on. It can be reset by switching off the device and applying power again. The power circuit should be verified in this case to avoid situations where IP PoE devices connected to the switch do not start up due to too low a voltage.

Key features and functions:

  • can be powered from another PoE switch in 802.3af, 802.3at, 802.3bt60, 802.3bt90 or PoE Passive (PoE IN port) standards
  • amplifies and distributes the network signal (full-featured 1000Mbps switch)
  • cascaded power supply (one switch powers another)
  • ability to power up to 4 PoE 802.3af/at/bt60 receivers
  • up to 90W total power when powered from UTP
  • throughput of up to 1000Mbps
  • clear signalling of operating and identification status
  • easy and quick start-up without configuring parameters
  • wide operating temperature range

APT-5-50 has a polycarbonate base fitted with mounting holes to allow installation using ADD-PIN pins in the 10.8mm grid that is found in ABOX series enclosures and mounting plates fitted with a hole.

The device has a protection level of IP20, a suitable enclosure (minimum IP44) is required to ensure protection from the elements and condensation.

The enclosure allows mounting in several ways:

  • with mounting studs on a 10.8mm grid, which is in all ABOX enclosures
  • with the use of mounting studs for RACK 19" and RACK 10" adapters
  • by screwing through additional holes to any flat surface

Installation notes

The total power consumed by the cameras (PoE receivers) connected to the extender must not exceed the power budget offered by the switch powering the entire line:

  • for 802.3af standard it is approximately 13W available on the extender
  • for 802.3at standard it is approximately 25W available on the extender
  • for 802.3bt60 standard it is approximately 51W available on the extender
  • for 802.3bt90 standard it is approximately 71W available on the extender

Consider IR illuminators - they turn on at night, increasing power consumption significantly.

Also consider the loss in the power cable - this depends on its cross-section, length and the voltage value on the PoE line.

Examples of applications

Example of application of APT-5-50 as LAN+PoE extender for 3 PoE IP cameras.

Example of use of APT-5-50 and APT-4-11 as LAN+PoE extenders for 6 PoE IP cameras.
